Braces- Friendly Valentine’s Day Recipes

Valentine’s Day is almost here, and we know that means many of our patients are getting ready to spend a wonderful day celebrating the love they share with their special someone. We love this holiday, as it’s a great reminder not to take the loved ones in your life for granted – but unfortunately, it’s often celebrated with hard, sticky, and sugary sweets. The caramels and lollipops we love to indulge in this time of year can wreak havoc on braces – so here are a couple of Valentine’s recipes that won’t break your braces.

Egg in a Heart Shaped Basket

Thanks to Reclaiming Provincial for this one – it’s an easy breakfast that’s sure to delight your loved one. To start, butter a piece of toast on both sides, then cook it over medium heat on a pan until it’s lightly browned. Take it off the pan, then cut or tear a heart-shaped hole in the middle. Put it back on the pan, then crack an egg into the whole and cook it through. Add a bit of salt and pepper and serve with an arrow of bacon for extra points!

Heart Shaped Potatoes

This is an awesome side for a Valentine’s Day dinner, and we thank Haniela’s for the recipe.

•    You’ll need six large potatoes
•    1/4 cup olive oil
•    1 tsp of salt, some black pepper
•    2 tsp caraway seeds
•    1/2 tsp of paprika

Preheat the oven to 400ºF, then line a baking sheet with foil and brush with olive oil. Fill a pot with a quart or two of water, add a tbsp of salt, bring it to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer. While boiling, peel and slice your potatoes to about half an inch thick, then use a metal heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out as many hearts as you can. Cook the potatoes in the water for three minutes, then drain and combine them with your olive oil, caraway, salt, pepper, and paprika. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes, then spread your potatoes onto the baking sheet and roast for 20-25 minutes, flipping them halfway through. Once they’re golden brown and irresistible, serve them with your favorite entree and enjoy!
