Braces-Friendly Recipes for St. Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick’s Day started out as a religious feast day to honor the patron saint of Ireland and has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, parties, and lots of green festive food! We want you and your family to enjoy this holiday in all its green splendor, but as your Tucson orthodontist, we want to help you take care of your braces and teeth first and foremost. You’ll make others green with envy with your straight smile! Here are some recipes that will let you in on the St. Paddy’s Day fun without harming your braces.


This recipe is a version of the St. Patrick’s Day classic in easy-to-eat soup form.


● 2 tablespoons butter
● 1 medium onion, diced
● 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
● 1/2 cup celery, chopped
● 2 cups carrot, chopped
● 2 bay leaves
● 2-3 sprigs of fresh thyme
● 1/4 teaspoon pepper
● 1/2 teaspoon salt
● 2 cups potatoes, diced
● 4 cups cabbage, roughly chopped
● 8 cups low sodium chicken broth
● 1/2 lb cooked corned beef, sliced into thin pieces


1. In a large soup pot, melt the butter, then add the onion, garlic, celery, carrots, bay leaves, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir frequently to saute until the vegetables are tender.

2. Add the chicken broth, cabbage, and potatoes, then cover the pot and bring everything to a boil. Reduce the heat to simmer for 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

3. Add the corned beef and simmer, uncovered, for another 10 minutes.

4. Strain out the thyme sprigs and bay leaves. Add more salt/pepper to taste.


This kid-friendly treat brings an Irish flag theme to a soft-textured dessert.


● 2 small boxes lime Jello
● 2 small boxes orange Jello
● 1 can sweetened condensed milk
● 6 envelopes unflavored gelatin
● 4 3/4 cups boiling water – divided
● 1/4 cup cold water
● whipped topping (garnish)
● sprinkles (garnish)
● 36 plastic shot glasses


1. In a bowl, combine lime jello, 2 envelopes gelatin, and 2 cups boiling water. Stir until jello is dissolved.

2. Pour into glasses, filling each about ⅓ full.

3. Place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

4. In a bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk and 1 cup boiling water. Stir well.

5. In another bowl, add ¼ cup cold water and sprinkle in 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin, set aside for 1 minute. The add ¾ cup boiling water and stir well. Add to the milk mixture and stir.

6. Remove glasses from refrigerator and pour the milk mixture on top of the lime jello layer, filling another ⅓ amount.

7. Put glasses back in the refrigerator to chill for another 20 minutes.

8. In a bowl, combine orange jello, 2 envelopes gelatin, and 2 cups boiling water. Stir until jello is dissolved.

9. Remove glasses from the refrigerator and pour in the last layer, filling the remainder of the glass.

10. Place in the refrigerator until set, about 20 minutes.

11. Garnish each with whipped topping and sprinkles.


These Oreo truffles are a great way to portion dessert into little bites of fun.


●  1 package (1lb, 1oz) Double Stuff Oreos Cool Mint Flavor
● 22 cookies with cream centers included
● 10 cookies without cream centers
● 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, room temperature
● White candy melts
● Green candy melts


1. Finely crush cookies in a food processor or a zip top bag with a rolling pin.

2. Stir cream cheese in with the cookie crumbs, using the back of a large spoon to mash all together.

3. Roll the mixture into 1” balls and place on a wax paper lined cookie sheet.

4. Cover the balls with another sheet of wax paper and place in freezer or refrigerator for a few minutes.

5. Melt candy melts as directed on package.

6. Dip each ball in the melted candy melts, alternating between green and white or as desired, tapping off any extra, and set aside on wax paper lined cookie sheet to dry.

7. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
